A fifth generation Family Run Business founded by Reuben Rackham in 1885 as Flour Millers, operating both Water and Steam driven Mills at the Deben Mills site.
We have continued to expand and diversify over the years. Flour Milling production finally ceased at Deben Mills in 1970 following the death of Mr Edward Rackham (one of Reuben’s sons) who had carried on producing stone-ground Wholemeal Flour in the Water powered Mill long after the later Steam powered Roller Mill had ceased operation, the production of Animal Feed for Farm use was expanded.
From the early 1970’s through to 1990, Smallholders and Farmers were the main Customers for our Animal Feed production. Following the demise of of the smaller commercial Livestock Farmers and closure of local Livestock Markets, production of Animal Feed on site ceased in 1990. Despite this, sales of Horse, Poultry, Pig, Sheep & Goat Feeds, together with Pet Foods, Raw frozen Dog Foods and Wild Bird foods for the leisure market were rapidly expanded and we continue to serve this market today alongside the Fuel Business. This now consists of Smokeless Fuels for Multi-Fuel Appliances and open fires, Wood Pellets for Bio-Mass Boilers, Kiln Dried Logs & Kindling, Salt for water softeners and Bottled Propane and Butane Gas.
In the 1960’s, we became members of the Approved Coal Merchants scheme and in the 2000’s we joined the Approved Wood Fuel Merchant Scheme meaning that all our solid fuels comply with strict quality standards.
